Towards a Low-carbon Steel Sector: Overview of the Changing Market, Technology and Policy Context for Indian Steel

March 2020

CO2 emissions from India’s steel sector could increase by up to 837 million tonnes by 2050 if steel demand continues to grow, with serious implications for the environment. This report, published under the leadership of The Energy and Resources Institute, suggests a comprehensive package of measures that would keep the sector competitive while reducing its environmental impacts. They include maximising the use of domestic scrap; deploying energy efficiency measures; facilitating greater resource efficiency throughout the economy; and establishing pilot and demonstration plants to test emerging low-carbon technologies.
